　　Laba is celebrated on the eighth day of the last lunar month, referring to the traditional start of celebrations for the Chinese New Year. La in Chinese means the 12th lunar month and ba means eight.

　　Legends about the origin of this festivity abound. One holds that over 3,000 years ago sacrificial rites called La were held in the twelfth lunar month when people offered their preys to the gods of heaven and earth. The Chinese characters for prey and the twelfth month were interchangeable then, and ever since La has been used to refer to both.

　　Since the festival was held on the eighth day of the Last month, people later appended the number eight , giving us the current Laba .

　　The majority Han Chinese have long followed the tradition of eating Laba rice porridge on the Laba Festival. The date usually falls in mid-January.

　　in the beginning, we saw flames with thick black smoke coming out from the sith floor; and we also heard the eplosion of the gas tank mied with the noisy sounds from shattering windows. soon the fire spread one by one to the floors above, and finally reach the top floor. some aluminum window frames and some brick walls meted and collapsed from the heat. many people like myself stood outside on the streets watching the fire in horror as we heard the sirens and gas eplosions. luckily there was no one in that office building when the fire broke out.

　　the fire-men were unable to control the fire until the top floor was burned out; it took about one and a half hours for the firemen to put out the big fire. the net morning newspapers carried the story and pictures of the fire.
