　　the atmosphere is filthy. the air is thick with dust and burnt oil. dark smokes are being emitted from chimneys, and choking fumes are being released from numerous vehicles. stay a little while in a big city, then wipe your forehead with your handkerchief, it is black. hang out your washing on the line to dry, you will have to wash again. garbage is left to accumulate in unsanitary heaps that attract flies and give off bad smell. nor is the pollution confined to air and land. large quantity of sewage and chemical waste are dumped daily into rivers, lakes and the sea, which kills millions of fish. noises coming from honking cars, rumbling machines and broadcasting loudspeakers may make a person nervous and irritable, even drive him crazy.

　　我的寒假生活 My Winter Holiday

　　During the winter holiday, I was very happy because of the Chinese new year and other reasons. During the holiday, my parents and I went back to my hometown in the countryside in Hebei Province.

　　I had not come back for several years, so that I was so surprised to find that great changes had taken place in this small village in the past years. Almost every family in the village had color TV set and some of them had computers. Many families had their houses newly built or rebuilt. Previously,could be seen everywhere, but now they have taken on an entirely newlook. Motorcycles or even private cars are not luxuries any more.

　　寒假期間，因為春節和其他原因我很開心。假期期間，我父母和我回到河北的鄉下老家。我已經好幾年沒回去了，所以看到過去這些年這座小村莊發生的巨大變化我感到很驚訝。幾乎村里的`每一戶人家都有彩電，有的還有了電腦。很多家庭都有了新建的或重建的房子。以前，老式瓦房隨處可見，但是現在它們看上去完全是一幅新的景象。摩托車或者甚至是私家車也已不再是奢侈品了。

　　One of the villagers proudly told me that he and some other villagers were going to join a tour and travel abroad.

　　Previously, the villagers were busy in their farm work all the year round, but now they have much more time and money to relax or entertain. Traveling has become a new trend among villagers. Seeing these amazing changes, my father said that he would go back to my hometown as soon as he retired. As for me, I strongly supported his idea.

　　一位村民驕傲地告訴我他和其他一些村民跟團出國旅游了。以前，村民們一整年都忙于農活，但是現在它們有更多時間和錢去放松娛樂。旅游已經成為在村民當中已經成為一種新潮流了。看到這些驚人的變化，我爸爸說他一退休就想回到家鄉。而我也強烈支持他的觀點。
